symptom

Failed to restore eDirectory database from embox backup for disaster recovery

fact

Novell NetWare 6.5

Novell NetWare 6.0

Novell eDirectory 8.7.3 for NetWare 6

Novell eDirectory 8.7.3 for NetWare 6.5

note

When all servers are no longer operational and the only backup available is a EMBOX or DSBK backup, DSBK.NLM can be used to restore the backup unconditionally.

This is not possible using embox as it needs to contact other still operational servers in order to restore the backup.

WARNING:  Do not restore a backup while the original server the backup was taken from, or any of the other servers are still operational. In this case use EMBOX to restore !!

fix

To restore the backup when no other server is available you can use DSBK.NLM

A simple explanation of the basic functions of DSBK.NLM can be found through "dsbk help"

To restore unconditionally use the following command line:
dsbk restore -f sys:/backup/backup.bak -l sys:/backup/backup.log -r -a -o -n -v -k

To create a backup using DSBK.NLM use the following command line:
dsbk backup -f sys:/backup/backup.bak -l sys:/backup/backup.log -t -b -w
