Novell ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management - ZfD6.5

Novell Application Launcher (NAL)

symptom

"Auto-Start NAL" launcher config setting does not work.

How to force the NAL window to launch at startup.

fix

This feature was removed from the Zenworks for Desktops 6.5 version.  The option is still available in the Launcher config for backwards compatability with previous versions of Zen.  You can set the NAL to launch automatically at startup by selecting this option when installing the agent.

If the user has deleted the shortcut in the startup folder or if you did not choose this option when installing the agent, you can force the NAL window or NAL Explorer to launch at startup by using a workstation associated application object that puts the shortcut back.  The following is an example of how to configure an appliction object to do this.:

  1. In ConsoleOne, click on the toolbar icon to create an application.
  2. Select "simple application" and hit NEXT
  3. Type in a name for the application object and hit NEXT
  4. Leave the path to file field blank and hit NEXT
  5. Click on ADD and select "File existence"
  6. In the file path box that comes up, put in the path to the "All Users" startup folder, and the file nalwin32.exe.   (For example: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\nalwin32.exe) and then make sure you select the "File does not exist" radio button and hit OK.
  7. Click on ADD again and select "Operating System" and set up the appropriate version of windows, (For example: Windows 2000/XP, version >= 4.0) and then hit "OK"
  8. Hit NEXT
  9. Hit NEXT again
  10. Select the checkbox labeled "Display details after creation" and hit "Finish"
  11. Select the "Distribution Options" tab and then the "Icons/Shortcuts" sub tab.
  12. Click on ADD and select "Shortcut"
  13. Under the "Shortcut option" drop box, make sure it says: create if does not exist"
  14. In the Shortcut name field, give it a name that will show up in their startup folder, (For example: "ZenWorks NAL Window")
  15. In the Short location field, put in the path to the "all users" startup folder.  (For example: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup)
  16. In the Target file field, put in the path to the NALWIN32.EXE file which is at: C:\Program Files\Novell\ZENworks\NALWIN32.EXE
  17. Hit OK
  18. Click on the "Distribution Options" tab again and then the "Options" sub tab.
  19. Put a check in the box next to "Distribute Always"
  20. Select the "Never" radio button under the "Reboot" section
  21. Click on the "Run Options" tab and then the "Environment" sub tab.
  22. Select the radio button next to "Run as secure system user"
  23. Click on the "Identification" tab and then the "Icon" sub tab.
  24. Make sure there is a check in the "Disconnectable" box and not in ANY other box on this sub tab.
  25. Click on the "Associations" tab
  26. At the bottom of this tab, under "Defaults for subsequent associations" Put a check mark in the box "Force Run" and in "Force Cache" clear out ANY other check marks
  27. Click on "ADD" and add your workstation objects.
This will cause a shortcut that launches NAL to be created in the startup folder at system startup if one does not already exist.  Since it runs before the user logs in, even if the user deletes the shortcut before logging out, this application will replace it and launch NAL on the next reboot.

Note that this application will ONLY work properly when associated to workstation objects.  If you associate it to a user it will not work.  Also please note that the example uses NALWIN32.EXE which is the NAL window.  If you would rather use the NAL explorer interface, you would just need to change the appropriate paths to use the NALDESK.EXE application.
