fact
Novell NetWare 6.5 SP2
Novell NetWare 6.5
Novell NetWare NetStorage
Novell ZENworks Middle Tier
symptom
Error: configuration error: couldn't check user. No user file?: /nps/servlet/portalservice
change
Applied Netware 6.5 Support Pack 2
cause
ZEN middle tier and NetStorage are not supported on the same server. Updating to support pack 2 appears to cause upgrade issues when both are on the same server. In one case, it caused failed apache access which caused other web applications, like iManager, to fail with an Error: 500.
fix
Reconfigure/reinstall either NetStorage or ZEN on the server. If you are not running NetStorage on the server, you may edit the httpd.conf for Apache2 so that the xsrv.conf does not load.
