symptom

DontDisplayLastUsername doesn't work when authenticating locally

When upgrading from Windows NT Server version 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server, the Winlogon DontDisplayLastUserName value is overwritten from a value of 1 to 0

cause

When upgrading to Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Server Services selected, the Terminal Server .inf file (Tsoc.inf) changes the value to 0. This value is not changed if Terminal Server Services is not selected during the upgrade.

fix

Workaround:

Edit the registry value found in Microsoft article entitled "DontDisplayLastUserName Setting Lost Upgrading from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000" Q227458 to reflect the appropriate functionality, or use the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DontDisplayLastUserName
