fact

Novell Client 4.9 for Windows NT/2000/XP

symptom

Clients unable to map to server.  Error: "8884"

Server is up and running but some clients fail to login or map to it after bootup.

Traces show the clients resolve the server and volume objects just fine and when they read the network address attribute they get the proper IP address for the server. Also SLP is returning the proper Address for the server, but clients never attempt to connect on port 524 to that address.

fix

Disable Bad Name and Bad Address cache on the client

These settings can be disabled in the 4.9 client properties
Advanced settings
Bad Address Cache Timeout=0
Bad Server Name Cache Enabled=Off

See the following documents for more information regarding Bad Name Cache and Bad Address Cache
