fact

Novell NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 7

Hewlett Packard - Driver Support: CPQACPI.PSM

symptom

CPQACPI.PSM and its corresponding .MDI file are not present in the SP7 support pack for NW 5.1.

CPQACPI.PSM does not load in NW 5.1 SP7 after an update.

cause

The CPQACPI.PSM is the hyperthreading driver supplied by Hewlett Packard for use on servers that support the hyperthreading technology.  Novell provides the generic ACPIDRV.PSM and this is present in the SP7 patch.
However, the Novell generic driver does not work properly on HP servers.  Also, there are some functionality issues in some environments where the CPQACPI.PSM is not appropriate for servers running NW 5.1 SP7.  Hence Novell has removed these from the support pack. This situation is not being changed in the future and Novell will continue to provide the ACPIDRV.PSM for future NW 6.5 and 7.x versions where the CPQACPI.PSM is no longer functional.

fix

Use the CPQMPK.PSM provided in the support pack for all NW 5.1 multiprocessing functions on HP servers.
Do not use the generic MPS14.PSM for HP servers.

note

Hyperthreading technology provides the functionality of virtual processors that are, on average, roughly equivalent to a processor that is 40% as powerful as the physical ones.  Though these are very effective in many instances, and operating systems don't necessarily need to support these outright, there are some issues with older OS's in which the kernel does not work well with the virtual machines.  This can cause minor to severe issues.  In the case of NW 5.1, the functionality exists, but on HP machines, the loss of processing power is minimal enough that the use of the CPQMPK.PSM is appropriate.
