Novell eDirectory 8.7.1 for All Platforms

symptom

Error: "Cannot convert local strings into a utf8 string"

Using the ice command line utility with an argument that exceeds 256 bytes in length

Using the ice command line with the -a parameter to specify a lengthy list of attributes that you want to be returned by the command.

cause

There are some limits imposed by the ice command line options. One of them is that each individual parameter can not exceed a length of 256 bytes.

fix

The error you get is a generic error when parsing the command line and can happen for a number of reasons. One unexpected reason for this would be that one of the parameters you are using exceeds the limit of 256 bytes.

Other parameters you may want to keep in mind is the fact that the command line can not exceed a limit of 512 bytes and that the number of parameters specified can not exceed 50.
