Volume Size Being Reported Incorrectly

fact

Novell NetWare 6 Support Pack 3

symptom

Volume reports being smaller than it should be.  By typing "nss space" on the server console the "Used Space" of the pool (59.31 GB) is much greater than the used space of the volume (40.26 GB).  In the screenshot you see this on DATA_VOL, all of the other pools and volumes appear normal.

Getting out of disk space errors when more space should be available.

Running a rebuild of the NSS pool did not fix this problem.

cause

There was purgable space outside the limits of the volume but not outside the limits of the pool.  A normal purge only takes place on the volume level while a purge during a pool rebuild will purge the entire pool.

fix

Running a pool rebuild with the purge option fixed this problem.  To do this type "nss /poolrebuild=POOLNAME /purge" from the server console.
