goal

Switching Between the NetWare Boot Loader and the DOS Boot Loader

fact

Novell NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 1

cause

With NetWare 6.5 Support Pack 1 the NetWare Boot Loader is available.  This same boot loader is used on the NetWare 6.5 SP1 Overlay CDs.  During an overlay installation if you choose "Manual" and then at the beginning of the C-Worthy install select a Boot OS (Dos or NetWare).

symptom

When the NetWare boot loader is active it will not execute the autoexec.bat.  It will immediately boot to NetWare.

When the NetWare boot loader is active and you "down" the server or quit from the internal debugger you will see:

Executable return code: 0

Type:

S to start NetWare

P to specify starting parameters

H for help

Enter selection:

If you wish to enter server startup parameters then type "P" <enter>.  Then on one line enter in all of the parameters "-ns -na" <enter>.  Then type "S" <enter> to start NetWare.  To make these parameters permanent create a file called C:\NWSERVER\CONFIG.NW and enter the parameters.

fix

You can switch to using the NetWare boot loader by typing "NWBOOT" from the server console.  Then check the logger screen for confirmation.

You can switch to using the DOS boot loader by typing "NWBOOT -UNDO" from the server console.  Then check the logger screen for confirmation.

For troubleshooting if booting to NetWare is failing you can boot to a floppy then go to C:\NWSERVER and start the server manually by launching SERVER.EXE.  The other method is to boot to the Overlay CD press <ESC> to Abort OS boot, and use "NWBOOT -UNDO" to restore the DOS boot components.
