Additional Documentation for SSIBACK.BAK and eMTOOL (or eMBOX):  SSIBACK.BAK documentation (URL: http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/edir871/index.html?page=/documentation/lg/edir871/edir871/data/alaf5up.html)

SSIBACK.BAK contains server-specific information needed for Novell's disaster recovery solution (called SBCON) and a variety of other solutions (not all).    Some backup solutions should be able to make a full backups and restores WITHOUT this file.  If you are only using Novell's solution for backing up your server then you will need this file to be backed up.   Consult the backup solutions documentation to see if this file is necessary.

fix

Some customers have reported that they have been able to back this up using the modules found in TSA5UP14.EXE

This can be backed up via eMBOX (or eMTOOL) located under iManager.  You must be on at least eDIR 8.71 and have iManager 1.5.2 installed or above (I suggest 2.02).  Version 2.02 can be installed on Novell NetWare 6.0 as a stand alone download available at download.novell.com (note:  If the link doesn't work, just type the path in your browser).  On NetWare 6.5 you will need to install this from the product CD.

To access this tool you will need to go to the following URL:  HTTPS://IPADDRESSOFTHESERVER:2200 > Select the iManager link > Login.  In order for this tool to work you MUST set up a RBS (Role Based Service) collection container.  If this is your first time you may get a wizard that will walk you through setting that up.  If you don't then you will need to set one up by going to the CONFIGURE button at the top of the screen (it is the button that looks like a person behind a desk).  From there expand RBS CONFIGURATION and select the CONFIGURE iMANAGER link.  It should be straight forward after that.

After the RBS collection container has been set up go to the ROLES AND TASKS button at the top of the screen (it looks like a tab with half of a red circle in it).  From there go to the eDIRECTORY MAINTENANCE link and expand it.  You will see your various options including BACKUP and RESTORE.

When backing up files you will be asked to what file you want the backup to occur to.  Put in a full path.  e.i.  SYS:\TESTBACKUP.  You will also have to do this with a log file that IS NECESSARY for a complete backup.  e.i. SYS:\TESTBACKUPLOG.  After entering in this information you will be able to point to the file(s) you wish to backup.  e.i. SYS:\SYSTEM\SSIBACK.BAK.  It only takes a few moments to complete.

Restoring a file is the same process in reverse.  NOTE:  YOU WILL NEED THE LOG FILE (generated during the backup) IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE RESTORE.

NOTE:  If you were to backup a TXT file for instance and then go and try to view the backup file you created with a text editor, you will see "garbage."  Until the file is restored it will be that way.  This is not like an SMS backup that allows you to go in and view files.  It must first be restored before it can be used properly.

note

If you cannot backup this file with your backup solution your ONLY option is EMBOX.  If you have issues backing up the file with EMBOX then please open a support call with Novell.
