Novell Client 4.9 for Windows NT/2000/XP

Novell Client 4.9 SP1A for Windows NT/2000/XP

Novell ZENworks for Desktops 4.0.1 - ZFD401

Novell ZENworks Middle Tier - Windows 2000

symptom

AuthXtier realm when going to login-xtier / nsadmin url

note

When the Middle Tier authentication process is working, the REALM listed in the login prompt received when attempting to hit oneNet urls (that require authentication) should list the tree name.  The tree name comes from whatever tree is running on the authentication domain listed in the registry (software\novell\xtier\configuration\xsrv\authentication domains\...).  If the midtier cannot communicate to this authentication domain server, then the REALM cannot display its tree name.

symptom

Cannot authenticate through the middle tier after upgrading to/using the 4.9x client.

change

Upgraded the client32 version on the Windows Middle Tier from 4.83sp2 to 4.9sp1a.

cause

The Xtier component on the Windows Middle Tier server is using some of the same client32 modules that are upgrading during the client install.

fix

Fixed in the Mid-Tier install in ZfD IR4 or newer found at  Novell Product Updates.

note

In one case, after installing IR4, the symptom persisted.  Re-installing the 4.9 sp1a client eliminated the symptom.

symptom

Receiving AuthXtier as the realm.  Subsequent login to the NSADMIN url returns a message: "xx is not authorized to access the NetStorage Administrator".

cause

There is no replica on the server acting as the Authentication Domain.  During the install of the Middle Tier, you must identify the authentication domain.  This should be a server that holds a copy of the user objects that will be logging in through the midtier.  If a server without a replica is defined, this problem is incurred.  (You can change the Authentication domain in the registry - Software\Novell\Xtier\Configuration\Xsrv\Authentication Domains\xxx  , where xxx is the IP or DNS of a server).

fix

Fixed in Service Pack 1 for ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management - a replica on the backend server is no longer a necessity
