fact

UNC path filter is enabled on the client advanced settings.

Novell Client 4.9 For Windows NT/2000/XP

symptom

Slow preformance opening explorer or UNC locations or accessing MS servers.

First access is slow then later access is faster.

Traces show workstation trying to access MS devices over Port 524 which is the Novell server port.

cause

Client has been able to resolve the names over one of the resolution methods.

fix

Create the following multi string value key on the workstation with Regedt32
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetwareWorkstation\Parameters\BadServer
with Regedt32 entry the MS server names and the MS ip addresses of those servers.
This should stop the client from trying to talk to them as if they were netware devices,
this requires 4.83 SP2 or 4.9 SP1 client to function properly.
