Microsoft Windows XP Professional
symptom
Windows XP with Encrypting File System (EFS) and password changes can cause EFS files to become unavailable.
The problem only happens with Windows XP.
Windows 2000 does not have a problem.
Error: "Access Denied" when trying to open EFS files after a password change.
fix
Fixed in the Novell Client 4.9 SP2 for Windows NT/2000/XP.
note
STEPS TO DUPLICATE:
1.) Create a folder and set EFS on the folder. Create a new text document the new encrypted folder. Make sure you put some text into the new text document.
2.) Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and select "Change Password".
3.) When you change the password, ONLY change the tree password. Don't change the workstation password.
4.) Logout of the network.
5.) IMPORTANT:==> When you login, enter your new NDS password. Because the passwords are out of sync, Windows will request a password. You enter in the old password, and put a check in the box that syncronizes the the NDS password with the workstation password on successful login.
6.) You get your desktop. You can go into the encrypted folders and see the files. But when you try to open the file, you get an "Access Denied".
