My Windows 2000 workstation needs to send print jobs via LPR to an NDPS printer agent

I am not able to add any Novell client software

When I print from my Windows LPR printer, the print job never makes it to the printer agent

fix

Novell recommends that you use the Novell client or iPrint client to print to an NDPS or iPrint printer.  However, there may be instances where it is not possible to install Novell software onto a Windows 2000 workstation.  This document details how to configure LPR printing from a Windows 2000 workstation to a NDPS/iPrint printer agent.  Other OSes (NT4 and Windows XP) are not detailed, but the steps may be similiar enough to be helpful on those other platforms.

DETAILED STEPS:

1.)  Create a printer agent and enable LPR support for that printer agent:

A.)  You will need to create an NDPS printer agent that complies to RFC 1179 standards.  Specifically, the printer agent name must be 31 or fewer characters in length and must not have any spaces in the name.  (Good examples:  "printeragent", "fredsprinter", "accountinglaserprinter".  Bad examples:  "printer agent", "Fred's printer", "Accounting's Laser Printer").  If you need assistance creating an NDPS Printer agent with LPR support, please view TID 10026897 titled "Setting up LPR/LPD (UNIX to NetWare) printing with NetWare 6" .

B.)  Once the printer agent has been created, you will need to enable LPR Client support.  In NWADMN32, this is done by double clicking on the printer agent in question and then clicking on the "LPR Client Support" button to the right.  Do put a check mark into the box "Enable LPR/LPD services for this printer".  Do not put a check in the second box "Filter all LF to CRLF...".  Click on the "OK" button to save your changes.  For iManager, you select "Manage Printer" and select type in or search for your printer agent name.  Once you select your printer, click on the "Client Support" tab.  Then click on the "LPR support" link.  Do put a check mark into the box "Enable LPR/LPD client support".  Do not put a check in the second box "Filter all LF to CRLF...".  Click on the "Apply" and then "OK" buttons.

C.)  Make sure you have the IP address of the server that is running this printer agent.  If you do not have TCP/IP bound to your NetWare server, then LPR will not function.

2.)  Create a printer on the Windows 2000 workstation:

A.)  Open the printers folder (Start | Settings | Printers) and click on the Windows "Add Printer" wizard.  When the "Add Printer" wizard comes up, click on the "Next" button.

B.)  When prompted for a Local or Network printer, select "Local printer" and then click on the "Next" button.  (Do not select "Network Printer".)

C.)  On the "Select the Printer Port" page, click on "Create a new port:".  From the drop down menu select "Standard TCP/IP Port as the "Type:".  Click on the "Next" button twice.

D.)  For the "Printer Name or IP Address", put in the IP address of the NetWare server.  Example:  10.1.2.3.  For "Port Name", this will auto-fill in.  You may need to modify what Windows creates if you have multiple printers with the same port name.  Click on the "Next" button.

E.)  For "Device Type", select "Custom" and click on the "Settings..." button.

F.)  Click on "LPR for "Protocol".  For "LPR Settings Queue Name", type in the name of the printer agent.  NOTE:  LPR does not permit printer names with spaces in it.  Please refer to RFC 1179 for further details.  IMPORTANT:  Make sure the box next to "LPR Byte Counting Enabled" is checked.  Failure to do so will cause this printer to fail.  Click on the "OK" button.  Click on the "Next" button.

G.)  Click on the "Finish" button.

H.)  Select your printer driver and select "Next".  If the driver already exists, you may be prompted to keep or replace the existing driver.  Make your selection and click on the "Next" button.

I.)  Give the printer a name.  Decide if this will be the default printer on the workstation or not.  Click on the "Next" button.

J.)  Decide if you want to share this printer as a Microsoft printer share.  For most users you would select "Do not share this printer" and click on the "Next" button.

K.)  If you wish to test your printer, select "Yes" to send a test page.  Otherwise, select "No".  Click on the "Finish" button and you are done.  Your workstation is now configured to send print jobs to an NDPS printer agent via LPR.
