What's the difference between mirroring and cloning?

fact

Novell Volera Excelerator

fix

Cloning is a "snapshot" of the DOS partition and system volume while mirroring is a real-time update of first two drives.

The clone is a snapshot of the DOS/System Volume of the appliance.  This means that .NAS configuration files, settings, custom pages, licenses, and SSL certificates are all backed up with the clone.  The contents of the clone don't change until an "update clones" command is issued.

note

“Update Clones” – updates the clone image on the Excelerator appliance with the current configuration
IMPORTANT: This process REBOOTS the Excelerator appliance

“Restore Clones” – restores the clone configuration
If update clone is never run then when the clone is restored the configuration will be reset to a "just CD reimaged" state.
IMPORTANT: This process REBOOTS the Excelerator appliance

Excelerator Cloning Process

A clone of the Excelerator system configuration is created and stored
Used to set appliance to a “last known working configuration”

Assumes a faulty configuration & restores automatically if:
 - 4 abnormal shutdowns occur within 30 minutes
 - 6 restarts occur within 30 minutes

Mirroring - a real time update of the first two drives of the machine.
When Excelerator is first booted after reimaging or recloning, the machine may seem sluggish for a few minutes while the second drive is synchronized with the first drive.

Mirroring & Cloning are only used on systems with 2 or more drives.
