fact

NTP

Novell eDirectory 8.7 for AIX

Novell eDirectory 8.7 for Linux

Novell eDirectory 8.7 for Solaris

symptom

ERROR: "ntpdate[9037]: the NTP socket is in use, exiting"

cause

The NTP daemon is already running

fix

You can stop the NTP daemon and time stamp the UNIX host, but this is not necessary. If the NTP deamon is running and configured properly, then it will keep the UNIX host's time in synch. If time is not in synch, then check the NTP configuration.

For additional information, refer to solution NOVL87757 - Configuring NTP (Network Time Protocol) on UNIX hosts.
