goal
What UDP ports does SLP need?
fact
Novell NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 6
Novell NetWare 5.0 Support Pack 6A
Novell NetWare 6.0 Support Pack 3
Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP
Novell Client 3.4 for Windows 95/98
symptom
Opened ports 427 and 524 and SLPINFO /D shows the DA's are NORSP.
cause
The client uses an ephemeral port as a source port and 427 as a destination port when talking SLP. The DA will respond to the client on it's ephemeral port. Which means that the source port from the server will be 427 but the destination port will be the ephemeral port the client choose when making a query to the server.
fix
The firewall will need to open ports in a range to cover the clients' ephemeral ports. The Novell client will start around 1024 and probably not go over 1500. Open this range of ports.
