fix

Overview of the changes to how ZLIB.DLL has been distributed and used by the Novell Client for Windows software:

In previous client releases, the ZLIB.DLL shipped with the Novell client included user-contributed modifications that are not yet included as part of the official ZLIB build.  (At least as of the ZLIB 1.1.4.)  Novell client code required these user-contributed modifications to be present in ZLIB.DLL, and as a result the Novell client code would fail if a "standard" version of ZLIB.DLL was installed on the workstation in place of the Novell-supplied version.  Customers would encounter this issue when updating the ZLIB.DLL by virtue of installing other applications that used ZLIB.DLL (and replaced or updated the currently installed version), or when manually updating ZLIB.DLL with later versions from the official ZLIB project site (http://www.gzip.org/zlib/).

To address this, current Novell clients now only require the functionality available in standard ZLIB.DLL builds.  As such the ZLIB.DLL on the workstation can be replaced with a later version of ZLIB.DLL built from the ZLIB standard source code, without impacting the functionality of the Novell functions that utilize ZLIB.  In addition, the ZLIB.DLL build distributed with the Novell client is now the "standard" version, without any user-contributed modifications included.  Customers with applications that require user-contributed modifications to ZLIB.DLL can replace the installed ZLIB.DLL and still use the Novell client software successfully, provided that the replacement ZLIB still properly supports all the standard ZLIB functions.

Discussion of specific Novell client versions and ZLIB.DLL versions distributed with the Novell client software:

Starting with Novell Client 4.83 SP1 for Windows NT/2000/XP and Novell Client 3.32 SP1 for Windows 95/98, the ZLIB.DLL 1.1.4 build shipped with the Novell client is the "standard" version of ZLIB.DLL 1.1.4 and does not contain any user-contributed modifications to the official ZLIB source available at http://www.gzip.org/zlib/.

This means the ZLIB.DLL shipped with the Novell clients does not contain the ZIP/UnZIP interfaces defined in the contrib/minizip directory of the ZLIB source code distribution.

If other applications in use on the workstation require a version of ZLIB.DLL that contains the ZIP/UnZIP interfaces or any other user-contributed modification not part of the standard ZLIB.DLL build, the version of ZLIB.DLL required by these other applications would need to be used in place of the ZLIB.DLL shipped with the Novell clients.

Note that the Novell-supplied version of ZLIB.DLL 1.1.4 may replace a previously installed copy of ZLIB.DLL due to being newer by version number and/or time stamp.  When replacing the Novell-supplied ZLIB.DLL with a version that contains user-contributed modifications, ensure the replacement version of ZLIB.DLL has been built from ZLIB 1.1.4 or later source code and properly supports all the standard ZLIB-defined interfaces.

Previously, the ZLIB.DLL 1.1.3 shipped with the Novell clients up to and including the Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP and Novell Client 3.32 for Windows 95/98 was call and interface compatible with the versions of ZLIB.DLL built with a user-contributed modification that the ZLIB 1.1.4 readme describes as:

"An experimental package to read and write files in .zip format, written on top of zlib by Gilles Vollant <info@winimage.com>, is available at http://www.winimage.com/zLibDll/unzip.html and also in the contrib/minizip directory of zlib."  (Also knows as the "ZIP/UnZIP" interface for ZLIB.)

The prior Novell clients, up to an including the Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP and Novell Client 3.32 for Windows 95/98, required that ZLIB.DLL contain these user-contributed ZIP/UnZIP (contrib/minizip) interfaces.

The "standard" version of ZLIB.DLL (up to and including 1.1.4) built from the original ZLIB source does not including the ZIP/UnZIP (contrib/minizip) interfaces.  As such, these builds of ZLIB.DLL will not supply the functionality needed by the Novell client modules that employ ZLIB in the Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP and Novell Client 3.32 for Windows 95/98 and earlier versions of the Novell client.

As such, for the Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP and Novell Client 3.32 for Windows 95/98 and earlier versions of the Novell client, replacing the Novell-supplied ZLIB.DLL 1.1.3 or earlier build with a ZLIB.DLL Win32 binary built from 1.1.4 or later source should work correctly ONLY when using ZLIB.DLL 1.1.4 or later binaries downloaded from http://www.winimage.com/zLibDll/, or other ZLIB Win32 binaries built from equivalent sources that include the ZIP/UnZIP interfaces defined in the contrib/minizip directory of the official ZLIB source code distribution.
