symptom

Reinstall of eDirectory fails.

After removing directory services using NWCONFIG, cannot re-install Directory Services.

When selecting ENTER on "Install Directory Services onto this server",  the  migration begins automatically.

Never gives choice to install into existing tree or create a new tree.

Server previously ran NDS version 7.xx.

cause

Old database files used with NDS 7.xx still remain in the SYS:\_NETWARE directory.  These files are 0.dsd, 1.dsd, 2.dsd, 3.dsd and 0.dsb. 

When the upgrade to eDirectory was performed,  eDirectory converts the database and uses  NDS.01 and NDS.DB for the database.  When the directory was removed using NWCONFIG, the NDS.01 and NDS.DB files were deleted from the SYS:\_NETWARE  directory.  However, the old NDS 7.xx files remain, even if it was upgraded years ago.  So when "Install Directory Services onto this server" option is chosen, it reads the old NDS files and automatically tries to migrate them.

fix

To resolve this issue, the NDS 7.xx files need to be removed from the SYS:\_NETWARE directory. 

You will need JCMD.NLM, available from www.netwarefiles.com.  Follow the steps below:

1.  Load JCMD.  This will take you to a SYS: prompt.
2.  Type "CD _NETWARE" to go to the _NETWARE directory.
3.  Type "ATTR *.DSD T-".  This will change the attributes of the .DSD files to allow them to be deleted.
4.  Type "ATTR 0.DSB T-".  This will change the attributes of the 0.DSB file to allow it to be deleted.
5.  Type "DEL *.DSD" to delete the .DSD files.
6.  Type "DEL 0.DSB" to delete the 0.DSB file.
7.  Reset the server.
8.  Load NWCONFIG.  You should now be able to install eDirectory onto this server.
