Hewlett Packard recommends customers having issues with the HP Web JetAdmin software for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP contact Hewlett Packard for technical assistance.

Potential workarounds:
 
Customers contacting Novell have reported they are more likely to successfully login to NDS from the HP Web JetAdmin interface if the Windows platform hosting the HP Web JetAdmin service is running the Novell Client 4.80 for Windows NT/2000 or Novell Client 4.81 for Windows NT/2000.  Note that whether success will actually be achieved is subject to the root cause description in the "Additional Information" section below.
 
The HP Web JetAdmin 6.5 readme recommends using the Novell Client 4.80 for Windows NT/2000 as being the supported Novell client version.  If a customer is not already in possession of the Novell Client 4.80 for Windows NT/2000, contacting Novell and referencing this document will facilitate obtaining this older client version.  (Note that various academic and archive sites around the world maintain web- and FTP-accessible resources that may provide older Novell client versions also.)
 
Another potential workaround is to perform all NDS object creation and modification from within NWADMN32, instead of using the capabilities of HP Web JetAdmin to create and modify the printing objects in NDS.  Create, associate and maintain the print server, printer and queue objects in NDS using NWADMN32, and then using the "Configuration" page in HP Web JetAdmin assign the print server object name and context that the JetDirect device should attempt to login as.  (Which does not require actually logging into NDS from the HP Web JetAdmin software; HP Web JetAdmin simply lets you successfully browse for context and assign the print server name without actually authenticating to NDS as anything other than [Public].)
 

Additional information:
 
This issue has been reproduced and investigated at Novell.  Structures being passed to Novell login APIs were not of the size required for the platform on which the API was being invoked.  As a result, unexpected results could occur depending on the contents of the memory adjacent to the structure that was passed.  This information has been supplied to Hewlett Packard for their own investigation and consideration.
 
Customers contacting Novell reported that this issue seemed to occur upon installation of the Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP or later on the Windows machine hosting the HP Web JetAdmin service.  Although Novell was able to successfully duplicate this issue using the Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP, the root cause was not specific to the 4.83 client.
 
This issue can be experienced using previous Novell client releases, although the frequency or predictability of encountering the issue depends on what information happens to reside in the memory adjacent to the structure that was passed to the Novell login API.  Customer results overall may be mixed, although successful or non-successful results may be predictable under specific stable configurations.
 
As of this writing, the service patches available for HP Web JetAdmin 6.5, "Service Patch 1 for HP Web JetAdmin 6.5 (12/10/01)" and "Service Patch 2 for HP Web JetAdmin 6.5 (04/17/02)", do not contain changes that would directly address the issue described in this document.
