goal

Printing and Microsoft Windows Terminal Server RDP with ZENworks OnDemand Services 2.

fact

Novell ZENworks OnDemand Services 2

Microsoft Windows 2000 RDP Client.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Server

symptom

It is cumbersome to maintain individual printers created on the Terminal Server utilized by OnDemand Applications.

Users running OnDemand applications cannot see their normal departmental printers when using the ODS2 application.

fix

Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Server (WTS) supports only local LPT printers.  LPT1 on the Terminal Server can be redirected (captured) to a print queue from a login script (capture LPT1=queue1...), if the printers are setup any other way, the printer will not be created in the RDP thin client session, OnDemand with WTS does not support Windows capturing, Novell NDPS or any other method.  As long as the driver for the printer is installed on the Terminal Server the users printer will be automatically created during the session (No Administrator intervention). This is the only automated way for creating the users printers on the Windows Terminal Server without Citrix MetaFrame/XP. Otherwise the administrator would have to manually create printers on the WTS before hand, or the ZENworks for Desktops DLU can create user groups that would automatically create the printer for the user during the session.
