note

Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Unloading NMAS.NLM on the NetWare 6 server will allow the login attempt to succeed

2. Uninstalling Client NICI 2.x on the workstation will allow the login attempt to succeed

3. Rename all occurrences of NMAS.DLL found in the PATH on the workstation will allow the login attempt to succeed

Background:

On workstations where the Novell Modular Authentication Services (NMAS) client is installed, the Novell Client login and authentication processes can automatically make use of the NMAS capabilities.

On some workstations that do not have the NMAS client installed, the NMAS components were otherwise intentionally or unintentionally available such that NMAS functionality could be attempted.  Because the NMAS client was not actually installed, the attempts would always fail with the error messages described in this document.

One such case where the NMAS components would be technically available on the workstation is when ConsoleOne is installed on the local workstation, and the "ConsoleOne\1.2\bin" directory is in the workstation's PATH environment variable.  (Which it can be by default after installation of some ConsoleOne snap-in packages such as Novell ZENworks for Servers snap-in support.)  Other cases include the NMAS components being located in a directory that has been mapped as a search path on the workstation, such that they're present in a directory being searched as part of the PATH environment variable.

Changes were made to the Novell client login interfaces to ensure NMAS authentication methods are not attempted unless the NMAS client is actually an installed product on the workstation, regardless of whether the modules are otherwise available on the workstation anyway.
