POA may report "Error processing admin task [E811]"

fact

Access mode to post office is Client/Server when getting the 8209 error

8209 error does not occur if access mode to post office is Direct

Problem happens when restoring items from GroupWise client

Problems happens when Admin tries to restore all mail from ConsoleOne

Happens when Restore Area is on a remote/different server than where POA and post office directory is located.

Does not happen if Restore Area is on same box as where the POA and post office directory is located

Happens when Restore Area and POA are installed on the cluster

fix

The ability to restore a full user's mailbox from ConsoleOne with the restore area on a different server has been fixed in GroupWise 6.5 Support Pack 2.

Use the NetWare UNC path in the Restore Area Management UNC path not the Cluster path.

Customers seeing this problem can go to http://support.novell.com/filefinder/ and search for the most recent Sevice Patch.  After applying the agents you will need to grant the POA object rights to the restore area directories (RWCMF).  Please make sure the /USER and /PASSWORD switches are remmed/remarked out.  If you are using Document Management and the /USER and /PASSWORD switches are used by the POA to connect to a remote storage area just grant the POA object the rights it needs to the document storage area and the /USER and /PASSWORD switches will not be needed.

Steps to duplicate:
1.  Create a test user in GroupWise (UserA)
2.  Start the GroupWise client as UserA.  Either have this users send themselves some messages or have some other users send some mail messages.  Open the messages, then delete them and remove them from the Trash Folder.  Exit the GroupWise client
3.  Back up or make a copy of the post office directory (if copying make sure to unload the POA and have all users who are members of post office exit the GroupWise client and Notify)
4.  Restore or copy the post office directory to a different NetWare server.
5.  Start ConsoleOne, connect to the domain that owns the post office you will be working with
6.  Highlight the domain or post office object in the GroupWise View portion of ConsoleOne.
7.  Click on Tools > GroupWise System Operations > Restore Area Management > click Create > Specify a Name and fill in the UNC path to the directory where you copied the post office > Click the Membership tab and Add either the post office or just UserA to membership > click OK to save changes.
8.  Make sure the logging on the POA is set to Verbose
9.  Edit the startup file for the POA and unremark the /USER and /PASSWORD switches.  Specify a user and their password that has RWCMF to the remote server where you copied the post office directory structure.  Restart the POA
10.  Start the GroupWise client (make sure the access mode is Client/Server -- you can verify this in the GroupWise client by clicking on Help > About GroupWise -- it should show a IP address)
11.  Click on File > Open Backup > highlight some mail messages and right click the mouse and choose Restore.  This is when you will see the 8209 error.

Workaround 1:  Use the GWRestore utility to recover the lost mail items.  If users are restoreing they will need RWCMF right, or the POA will need RWCMF rights to the restore directory.

Workaround 2:  If the access mode to the post office is Client/Server and Direct access the post office via Direct Mode from the GroupWise client.   This can be done by editing the target of the GroupWise icon to look like the following:
C:\NOVELL\GROUPWISE /@U-? /PH-path to the production post office.  In the GroupWise client click on File > Open Backup > highlight the mail items that need to be restored > right click and choose Restore.

If the Access Mode to the post office is currently Client/Server Only you can change this in ConsoleOne in the Properties/Details of the post office object to Client/Server and Direct.  This change can be done without having to unload the POA.  The POA should show "Processing admin task: Reload configuration".
