Novell NetWare 6.0

Veritas BackupExec 8.5

symptom

Server abends during the install of Backup Exec 8.5 Early Adopter version on a NetWare 6 server.

cause

During the installation of Backup Exec onto a NetWare 6 server, the server experiences an abend. BKUPEXEC.NLM is attempting to determine the location of the SERVER.EXE when the abend occurs. The issue is that the DOS partition was created with DOS from Windows 95/98, which is incompatible.

fix

Use a compatible version of DOS such as MS-DOS or the Caldera DR-DOS included with the NetWare 6 installation CD.

To resolve the issue without rebuilding the DOS partition or server, follow these steps:

1. Boot From disk 1 of the DOS 6.22 setup disks.
2. Enter at the prompt SYS C:.
3. The system files will copy to the DOS partition.
4. Reboot the server.
5. Run the Backup Exec installation.

To convert the DOS partition to Caldera DR-DOS from the NetWare CD, the reinstallation of the NetWare operating system will be necessary.

An example of the "SYS:SYSTEM\ABEND.LOG" follows:
