symptom

Can't login to CIFS server.

Invalid user name or password error.

Logging in to domain fails,  logging in to workgroup works.

Unable to login to CIFS server.

cause

CIFS.CFG was pointing to a BDC.  

fix

Edited CIFS configuration to point to the IP address of the PDC.

Before support pack 1 for NW 6.0 this would be in the etc\cifs.cfg file.  After SP1 this is done in the properties of the server object in ConsoleOne on the CIFS tab.
Sample CIFS.CFG entry:

-PDC 'MY-PDC' 123.45.67.89


Unlike "workgroup mode" where the CIFS server itself authenticates the user, in "domain mode"  the CIFS server forwards user credentials to the domain controller for authentication.  In an NT4 domain, NFAP version 1.0 only works with PDC's.    Make sure the domain controller you are using is the PDC.  In an Active Directory domain,  CIFS can work with any domain controller.

(BDC support is planned for a future version, if or when available.)  

When in Domain mode, NFAP has the same 16 character limitation as Windows Domains.  Check the NFAP server name in your CIFS.CFG file located in your SYS:\ETC directory.  Also, don't use the full DNS name as your NFAP server name.   After making changes and saving your CIFS.CFG file, you must do a CIFSSTOP and CIFSSTRT for the changes to be applied.
