Problem only occurs with .pdf files created from a windows workstation.

Same pdf files open without error from a windows workstation.

Same files located on a traditional (non-NSS) NetWare volume open without error.

Using a Mac workstation, the same files can be copied from the server to the local mac desktop, or to another directory on the server, and can then be successfully opened from  there.
   

cause

Adobe products for Macintosh will not open a file if it cannot find the file's corresponding mac resource fork.  .PDF files created from a mac have resource forks, but pdf files created from a Windows workstation do not.  Also, for legacy NetWare volumes with Mac Name Space loaded, a resource fork is created by default for every file on the volume.  With NSS volumes, there is no resource fork created when Mac name space is loaded.  (This is by design to improve performance of backup systems -- adding a resource fork effectively doubles the number of files on the volume.)

This is why the problem only occurs with files located on NSS volumes that have been created from Windows workstations.

fix

Fixed in  AFPTCP.NLM dated December 13, 2001 or later.  Code was added to create a resource fork on   file open if none exists.  At the time of this writing, this update can be obtained by downloading the patch file AFP100J.EXE  from the file finder at Support.Novell.Com.
