fact

Novell NetStorage

Novell NetWare 6.0

symptom

Cannot login to NetStorage.

ERROR: "Client used wrong authentication scheme."

cause

NetWare server running NetStorage cannot resolve its own name via DNS.

Xtier does not use the HOSTS file to resolve names, only DNS.

fix

An A record is needed on the DNS server for the server running NetStorage.  Use the PING utility to ensure that the servers fully qualified DNS name used durring the NetStorage install can be resolved by DNS.

The RESOLV.CFG file on the NetStorage server needs the correct Domain Name as well as the IP address of at least one DNS server hosting the domain. In addition INETCFG must be used to fully enable the use of NETDB for the DNS lookup.  Network bind commands in Autoexec.ncf are not sufficient to enable the DNS resolution.
