symptom

Error:  NDPSM-X-358: Error <602>

Error occurs while saving a backup of the NDPS Manager database files.

The message is found in the SYS$LOG.ERR

fix

This error is a non-specific alert that something went wrong when the database PSMDB.DAT was being backed up. The fact that is showed up in SYS$ERR.LOG indicates that it happened during an automatic backup. If it had occurred during a manual backup, the error would have been displayed on the server console.

The process during which the failure occurred is roughly: the appointed time for the backup comes, and the Print Server Manager reads the database, and creates a temporary file which is an exact copy of the database. Then, the original file is closed. The Manager then opens a stream file which is an attribute of the Manager object and writes the data in the temporary file to the stream file.

Then, the stream file is closed, the temporary file is closed, and the Manager object is updated with reference to the timestamp of the successful backup (actually, the timestamp of the temporary file). If this process fails at any point (creating the temp file, opening the stream file, writing to the stream file, closing either file, creating the timestamp, etc) it will generate the error.
