fact

Novell Directory Services NDS v8.7x

LDAP

No timelimits have been specified for LDAP operations

symptom

error -626

LDAP error: "timeout limit exceeded"

LDAP error: 3

The LDAP trace file contains lines similar to the following:
[2001/08/22 18:04:52] Searching "$Å£]®ÈÒ4": NDS error:-626 (ignored)
[2001/08/22 18:04:52] DDCSearchToCB partially failed, err = -626
[2001/08/22 18:04:52] send_ldap_result 3::

cause

The LDAP client is connected to a server that doesn't contain replicas of all the partitions being searched.  In addition, at least one of the partitions doesn't have an active replica on any server.  An "all referrals failed" message (DS error -626) is returned to the LDAP server, which returns LDAP error 3, timelimit exceeded, to the client.

fix

Add more replicas such that an active one is available for every partition.  Novell recommends at least three per partition.
