symptom

Event Log Errors with Performance Counters and the perfctrs.dll or nwpfctrs.dll file.

cause

Windows NT and 2000 can track performance statistics on different devices/bindings/protocols. The standard set of these devices use the perfctrs.dll or perfdisk.dll file. The performance statistics tracking can be turned off and on for each device. If the device becomes disabled/removed and the performance tracking is still enabled, the OS will generate an event log entry to note this problem at either system bootup or at every performance statitistics poll interval, since it can not gather performance statistics on a disabled devoce. These error entries can clog the Event Viewer log quickly.

fix

The performance counters can be disabled on any device/binding/protocol without affecting it's regular functionality (other than it will no longer be able to report statistics to such management tools as Performance Monitor - PERFMON). If there are errors with a specific device, try disabling it using one of the following methods:

 Disable Method 1:

Use the "Extensible Counter List" program (EXCTRLST.EXE) from the Windows NT/2000 Resource Kit (in both the NT Workstation/Win2K Pro and Server versions). When you launch this program it will list all service counter names with their corresponding library (i.e. NwlnkNb     perfctrs.dll). You can disable the counter by highlighting it and then CLEARING the checkbox for "Performance Counters Enabled".

 Disable Method 2:

Using REGEDIT or REGEDT32 browse to the following registry key:

     HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Look for the service name listed in the error (i.e. NwlnkNb, NwlnkIpx, NetWareWorkstation, etc...)

Below this key, there should also be a "Performance" subkey. The "Performance" key should have the following 5 values:

     Close
     Collect
     Disable Performance Counters
     Library
     Open

You can set the "Disable Performance Counters" to 1 to disable performance statistics for this service.

NOTE: This has the same effect as using the EXCTRLST utility and clearing the "Performance Counters Enabled" checkbox.
