goal
NetWare 5.1 Server name change, serverID change or IP address change
Change server name
Change serverID
Change server IP address
This solution is a comprehensive document to describe the procedures and considerations when changing the Server name, Server ID (formally known as the internal IPX address) or IP address of a NetWare 5.x server. This document includes several, but not all, of Novell's optional products installed on the server.
There are other solutions documented describing some of these components, but this is an attempt to pull them all under one solution.
change
Follow this procedure when changing a NetWare 5 server's:
- Name
- ServerID (Internal IPX Address)
- IP Address
fix
WARNING: These procedures are for NetWare 5.1 servers ONLY.
WARNING: Only change one at a time and then the server MUST be rebooted and wait for that change to sync to the other servers. If you change more than one at a time you MAY cause CRITICAL NDS errors.
WARNING: When deleting NDS objects as described below, allow the obituaries of those objects to process completely. See TID# 10025428 for more details regarding obituaries.
YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE STEPS IN ORDER
Section I - NAME CHANGE
Section II - INTERNAL IPX ADDRESS CHANGE
Section III - IP ADDRESS CHANGE
Section IV - ADDITIONAL CHANGES
The following procedures walk you through changing the server name, server ID and IP address . In order to properly change these components you MUST complete several steps in a specific order. Here's a quick overview. You will first delete several NDS objects and WAIT for all obituaries to process. Each of these objects are either tied to the server's name or the server's IP address. Then you will run the Server Name Change procedure only, reboot the server and WAIT for the limber process to synchronize the server's new name. Next you will run the ServerID Change procedure only, reboot the server and WAIT for the limber process to synchronize the server's new ServerID. Then you will run the server IP Address Change procedure only, reboot the server and WAIT for the limber process to synchronize the server's new IP address.
During this procedure the server will be rebooted several times so make sure users are not connected to the server during this time.
Initial Verifications
1. Verify the NDS replica ring is healthy with NO ERRORS. Don't continue if you have errors, specifically -625 errors to any servers in the replica ring. The server MUST be communicating to all servers in its replica ring.
2. Verify that all services are currently working properly before making any changes. This will help identify any product that was 'broken' before completing the following procedure.
The following objects must also be deleted ONLY if you change the server name:
Delete 'NLS_LSP_<servername>'
Delete '<servername> SMS RPC' (if there are two delete the one with the old server's name)
The following objects must be renamed ONLY if you change the server name:
Rename '<servername>_SYS'
Rename other volumes
Rename '<servername> Backup Queue'
Rename 'LDAP Group - <servername>'
Rename 'LDAP Server - <servername>'
Rename '<servername>_ZenInvService'
Rename 'Distributor_<servername>'
Rename 'RWC_<servername>'
Rename 'ZENworks for Servers - <servername>'
Critical - Verify that all obituaries process completely before proceeding. Refer to TID referenced earlier for more details on obituaries.

For NAME CHANGE ONLY!:
- Recreate the Server's NLS_LSP_<servername> License Service Provider Object
Start NWCONFIG, Select License Options, Create License Service Provider, Authenticate with the Container ID and Password, The LSP object NLS_LSP_<servername> will be created.
Continue with the following changes...
For Name, Server ID, or IP address changes:
- For Unix print services or NFS, load Unicon, Manage Services, NIS, Administer NIS, Manage Replica Databases, highlight old <servername> and press ESC and delete, esc back to main menu, then Unicon, Manage Services, NIS, Initialize Master NIS Maps, exit unicon when complete.
- Run PKIDIAG.NLM to change the IP address listed in the following objects SAS Service - <servername>, SSL CertificateIP - <servername>, SSL CertificateDNS - <servername>. You don't have to delete and recreate these objects. NOTE: If you are running NW 5.1 please load PKIAPI.NLM before loading PKIDIAG.NLM.
- restart the ldap server. unload nldap/load nldap. Verify successful load.
- restart the web server to consume the newly created certificates. nvxwebdn.ncf/nsweb.ncf
- Apply changes to web server configurations. From the browser, https://<server's IP_address or DNS name>:2200, Click on the server name in the NetWare Enterprise Web Server Manager, You may get a message similar to: Warning: Manual edits not loaded. Some configuration files have been edited by hand. Use the 'apply' button on the upper right side of the screen to load the latest configuration files. Click Ok, then click apply. If you don't get this message, just verify the web server is running properly.
- OS support packs must be reapplied any time components are installed or reinstalled from the NetWare CD, or the newly installed components will not function properly because the unpatched version is what is installed from the CD.
- Reboot the server, The server MUST be rebooted for the changes to take effect.
- After Server is back up and functioning, from the server console type 'SET DSTRACE=+LIMBER' then 'SET DSTRACE=*L'
- Verify NDS replicas are healthy (don't continue if you have errors)
- Start ConsoleOne - Verify all objects have the new server name and all aspects of the system are functioning properly.
