symptom
Timesync not working over TCP/IP
Error message on Timesync Debug Screen : *** TIMESYNC: Unable to communicate with server host.domain! ***
The servers are able to ping each other, NDS can synchronize (because NDS uses both UDP and TCP).
Primary/Single reference or Reference servers do not participate in time synchronization over TCP/IP. It does not matter whether you use configured lists with IP addresses of the sources or DNS-names. The same servers work fine if running IPX.
cause
TIMESYNC.NLM by default will use NCP on UDP to communicate with other time servers. If you disable this on for example your source server, the time consumers will not be able to get time from this server unless all servers are at the same setting:
For example if SVRB is set to not use UDP for NCP when SVRA tries to talk to B, B will reply with a Send Via TCP. SVRA will respond with a reset.
fix
Troubleshooting :
A trace of the traffic between two servers attempting to exchange time will show the following scenario :
Time consumer server sends a NCP Create service connection request to the time source on port UDP 524
Time source server replies with an ICMP Destination port unreachable response
Option 1: Change the setting back to enable NCP over UDP. The setting to change is NCP over UDP = on, which can be found in Monitor|Server Parameters|NCP. The server where you change this will have to be rebooted in order to become effective.
Option 2: Set all servers to only use TCP for NCP.
