goal
Using Non-ASCII standard characters in an LDIF file
fact
Customer would like to use non-standard characters such as Japanese/Chinese/Arabic/Swedish et al.
Customer is using Bulkloader OR ICE
symptom
Bulkloader/ICE does not interpret the characters
cause
LDIF standard (RFC 2849 http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2849.txt) only uses Standard ASCII characters in LDIF files.
fix
You will need to use Base 64 encoding inside of the LDIF file. Please note when using base 64 encoding, your attribute will have to be followed by two colons, ie sn:: . If you do not put in the two colons then the interpreter (ie bulkload/ICE) will not recognize it as being Base64 encoded. Novell's LDAP Developer Guide (ISBN 0-7645-4720-8) goes into greater detail on LDIF and Base64 encoding. To go into the mechanics of it is beyond the scope of this solution.
