fact

Novell Client 4.8 for Windows NT/2000

Novell Client 4.71 for Windows NT/2000

Microsoft Windows 2000

symptom

Unlocking a Windows 2000 workstation causes Windows to shut down.

Unlocking a Windows 2000 workstation causes it to shut down if a previous request to unlock the workstation is allowed to timeout.

On a Windows 2000 Terminal Server, the locked GUI sits and flashes.

cause

Since the release of version 3.51, Windows NT has had a timer that is turned on by certain events (such as the unlock workstation request).   In Windows NT versions 3.51 and 4.0, this timer was ignored by Windows. In Windows 2000, this timer is actually used.   The Novell client also has a timer, set to a different interval. The Windows timer expired before the Novell timer expired, thus causing Windows to detect an open process that it did not expect to encounter.  This condition caused Winlogon to shut down the workstation the next time it had an opportunity.  The patch makes Novell's timer expire before the Windows timer expires so that Windows encounters no unexpected open processes when its own timer expires.

fix

The problem is is resolved with LOGINW32.DLL dated 14FEB2001 or later.

note

Steps to duplicate on a Windows 2000 workstation:

1.)  At the desktop hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and select "Lock Workstation."
2.)  At the locked workstation screen, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL  and select "unlock workstation".
3.)  At this point, do not enter anything. Wait for this GUI to time out and revert back to the locked workstation screen (several minutes).
4.)  When the locked workstation screen is back, again hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and again select "unlock workstation."
5.)  Enter the correct password and either hit "enter" or click "ok."  The desktop might briefly flash, then a blank desktop will remain for about 5 minutes. At some point the screen will make a slight change (usually to a lighter blue), then the "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional--It is now safe to turn off your computer" message will appear.
