fact
Novell BorderManager 3.x
Novell NetWare 4.11
Novell NetWare 5.x
SuSE Linux FTP Server
symptom
FTP initial connection is very slow with the filters loaded.
MPUTS and MGETS is very slow even with small file sizes.
initial connection times out using a ftp client
Timer cancelled blocking call
rl-recv: Blocking call cancelled
DoDirList returned 0
cause
The SusE Linux server has some kind of authentication turned on that is requesting that the client authenticate but when the client is unable to authenticate the server allows the client through. This whole process takes about 2 1/2 minutes. With the filters unloaded on the BorderManager server the process is immediate. Because of this is looks as though there is a filter issue.
fix
The Linux server was using port 113 for authentication. Created filter exceptions for port 113 and the connection was much quicker.
Make sure your ftp client is configured to use passive if you are behind a firewall.
The newer proxy.nlm seem to help with the MPUTS.
