symptom

Unknown objects in a mixed environment

Viewing the objects with DSBrowse for DS 7.x servers and DSView for DS 6.x servers shows an unknown attribute in the object class, and the objects have an auxiliary class that contains all the correct attributes.

DS 8.x or eDirectory server has auxiliary classes installed.

cause

DS 7.x and DS 6.x are a type of database called Record Manager (RecMan), and as such do not understand auxiliary classes, which which were introduced in DS 8.xx, which is a FLAIM database.  In order for auxiliary classes to exist in a mixed environment, the objects are given an unknown attribute.  Even though they show up as unknown objects, they are known and are perfectly intact and useable.

note

You can confirm that the apparently unknown objects are intact by viewing them directly on the eDirectory/NDS 8 server console, using DSBROWSE or ConsoleOne there. This ensures you are reading that server's database, not one on a pre-NDS 8 server which shows them as pseudo-unknown objects.

fix

The only way to remove the apparently unknown objects is to remove RECMAN DS 7.x or DS 6.x servers out of the replica ring. If there is a need to have a copy of a replica on a server that is running something other than NDS 8 or eDirectory, objects that have an auxiliary class defined will show as unknown objects on servers that are running a NDS version that does not directly support auxiliary classes.  This is normal and does not indicate a problem in any way.
