Novell NetWare 5.0

Novell NetWare 5.1

Novell Directory Services 7

Novell Directory Services 8

symptom

Error: "Could not read from Value.dt or Entry.dt"

Error: "Could not read from Value.ds"

When running a repair, getting the message "Could not read from value.dt" or "Could not purge value.dt"

cause

The Directory Services database gets corrupted on a non-present object or attribute and hangs or aborts during a repair of the database.

fix

Make sure the latest dsrepair version is being used.  If a local database repair does not fix the problem, unload DS.NLM, then "LOAD DS -NDB"  This will produce the error "Could not open local database, it is inconsistent".  This is normal.  Run a local database repair with "Check Local References" and "Rebuild Operational Schema" set to YES (all other options set to NO). Run until there are 0 (zero) errors.  After exiting the repair, the database should open.

If the problems continue, even with the -NDB switch loaded, look at which object the repair is getting stuck on and if it is the same object every time.  If the object can be deleted, do so and then try the repair again.  If the object doesn't exist in NWAdmin, use DSBROWSE to see if the object is a Deleted Entry or not.  Try deleting replica that holds the bad object and then try another repair.

If the problem persists, remove DS and reinstall.  If this is not an option, call Novell Technical Support.
