symptom

Unable to see an object in NetWare Administrator to delete it, but the object exists.

Using DSBROWSE to delete objects from NDS

Error: -601 error trying to delete an object.

Objects dissapear and reappear

Objects switch from unknown to valid objects

cause

Inconsistent objects between replicas.  The server that NWAdmin/ConsoleOne reads from does not have a valid object, but other servers in the replica ring do.

fix

DSBROWSE is a free utility for NetWare 5.x/6.x that allows an administrator to browse and manage the contents of a local NDS database.  This utility is powerful because the database is shown in its complete form (all attributes timestamps, etc., are shown).  It is a handy tool for comparing servers that might be corrupted, or to check schema, etc.  It can also be used to send and receive individual objects between servers, whereas DSREPAIR will only allow an administrator to send or receive an entire replica/partition.

DSBROWSE replaces DSVIEW from NetWare 4.x, and is substantially easier to use; all functions are menu driven.
By default, the latest Support Pack for NetWare 5.1 and NetWare 6 have DSBROWSE included.

To download DSBROWSE for NetWare 5.x ( NDS7 or NDS8 ) go to  http://support.novell.com/filefinder/  (search for DSBROWSE.EXE).   Extract and copy the correct version into the SYS:\SYSTEM directory on any applicable servers.

To delete/receive/send an individual object using DSBROWSE:

1. LOAD DSBROWSE-A
2. Tree Browse
3.  Browse down to the object.
4. With the object highlighted, press F3.  This will show options to receive an object, resend an object, or delete an object from the database.  Authentication is required before completing these operations.

Note:  The option to delete an object with DSBROWSE is only available when utilizing the utility via a server which holds a real copy of the object to be deleted (i.e. R/W or Master replica.)

To search for unknown objects using DSBROWSE:

1. LOAD DSBROWSE
2. Object Search
3. Under "Object Information" in the "Name:" field put an "*" and in the "Class:" field type "unknown"
4. Press Enter after typing in "unknown"
5. ress F10 to Search

Note:  The option to search for an object with DSBROWSE is only available when utilizing the utility via a server which holds a real copy of the object to be deleted (i.e. R/W or Master replica.)
