fact

Novell GroupWise 5.5

Novell GroupWise 6

Novell GroupWise 6.5

Novell GroupWise Internet Agent

symptom

Internet e-mail is slow to reach GWIA

Telnet to SMTP port 25 on the GWIA server is slow to respond

Cannot receive Internet e-mail

GWIA loads slowly

cause

The Nameserver entries in the RESOLV.CFG file are bad or can not be contacted from the GWIA server

fix

Correct the SYS:\ETC\RESOLV.CFG file to list only valid/available DNS servers that have entries for external ip addresses.

cause

Entry in the HOSTS file had the correct Internet host name but had the wrong IP address listed (entry pointed to itself rather than the correct server)

The 6.x gwia does a reverse lookup on every inbound message and if the nameserver listed in the resolv.cfg is bad or only has internal information, then the intial 220 greeting can take several minutes to appear.  The 220 only appears after the dns request has timed out.

The Nameserver entries only have internal entries.

fix

Correct the IP address in the SYS:\ETC\HOSTS file

cause

With GroupWise 6.5, if the GWIA is set to use a Blacklist, the GWIA will perform a check against the Blacklist (RBL) Server.  This is basically a DNS query.  If the GWIA connects to the Blacklist server it will wait until that server responds before it moves on with the initial connection phase and gives the 220 response.

fix

Try a different Blacklist (RBL)  server that responds faster, or if you are using multiple servers try just using one.

cause

The file server is behind a firewall using NAT and NAT is not configured correctly

fix

See TID 10014421 for NAT configuration options

cause

Buildup of messages in the GWIA directories.

fix

1. Bring down GWIA.
2. Rename the <domain>\wpgate\gwia - 000.PRC, DEFER, GWHOLD, GWPROB, RECEIVE, RESULT, SEND, WPCSIN, WPCSOUT directories.
3. Restart the MTA to recreate the WPCSIN and WPCSOUT directories.
4. Restart GWIA.
5. Move the messages from the DEFER, RECEIVE, SEND, WPCSIN, WPCSOUT directories back in slowly.  If a message is moved in that will not process then remove the bad message.
