symptom

Error: "There was an error writing to . A write fault occurred on the network."

Error: "\\NDPS01: [Printer] A write fault occurred on the network"

Error: "A Write Fault has occurred on the network."

A default "write fault" error occurs when attempting to print through NDPS.

fix

There have been changes made to the 3.21 and 4.71 clients that will prevent some of the instances of Write Fault errors returned when printing through NDPS or NEPS. There is also a log file that has been enabled in order to help troubleshoot the occurrences of Write Fault errors that occur.

There was a change made to DPRPCW32.DLL that eliminates some and/or all of the WINSOCK errors. There was also a change to the provider so that it gets the status just before it starts the job so that a real status can be given rather than expecting the pHandle to have a valid status in it.

Also, the print provider will ping the NDPSM previous to sending the print, so it should be more rare to see a "write fault." Instead the print provider hands back an error to Windows to display and will log the error in the log file.

The log file in Windows 95/98 is located in
%WINDIR%\SYSTEM\NDPP95.LOG

The NT/2000 log file is located in
%WINDIR\SYSTEM32\NDPPNT.LOG
