symptom

Very slow performance (expanding the container in NWADMIN.EXE, for example)

cause

Mixed NetWare 4.x and NetWare 5.x environment without the latest Directory Services patches applied. The NetWare 4.x servers contain DS 5.17 on one server and DS 6.03 on the remaining servers in the partition. One NetWare 5 server contained a read-write replica of the problem partition.

fix

1. Patch DS on all NetWare 4.11 servers to 6.09 (See the latest NetWare 4.11 patch file)

2. Remove the NetWare 5.x server from the replica ring for the problem partition.

3. At this point, performance improved

4. Perform a Health Check (SeeTID #1060600 - NDS Health Check Procedures - Cross Platform  for info on how to perform a Health Check) on all remaining servers in the replica ring before attempting to add the NetWare 5.x server to the replica ring.
