HP JetDirect card crashes or produces MIO 80 error when attempting to connect to NetWare 5.0 server.

cause

Hewlett Packard JetDirect firmware unable to handle a non-IPX address as being the first value returned from the Network Address attribute on a NetWare server's NDS object.

fix

Upgrade the JetDirect device firmware to A.08.06 or later or K.08.06 or later as appropriate for the specific JetDirect device model.

Prior versions of the JetDirect firmware did not correctly treat the Network Address attribute as a multi-value attribute. Typically the internal IPX address of the NetWare server is the first value returned from the list, but if the IPX address happens not to be the first address in the list (which is still a legal order or arrangement of the addresses) the JetDirect firmware crashes completely upon reading the Network Address attribute and fails to initiate or respond to any further communication until the device is reset.

The 08.05 and later revisions of the firmware correctly parses through the entire Network Address attribute and discards all but the IPX addresses from the entire multi-value list. Visit the Hewlett Packard support web site at http://www.hp.com/ to obtain the latest firmware revision and upgrade method appropriate for the JetDirect device.

Note that this problem can occur unexpectedly, even though the JetDirect devices have been performing correctly in a NetWare 5.0 environment previously, and without any obvious initiating factor. Any event which causes the order of the Network Address attribute to change may cause the JetDirect firmware to fail connection next time the older JetDirect device attempts to login. Since the order of the addresses is actually legal and expected, operations such as DSREPAIR will not work around this problem.
