goal

Configuring SLP (Service Location Protocol) using DHCP.

fact

Novell NetWare 5.0

The NetWare 5 DHCP server supports options 78 and 79.

fix

There are only 2 things that DHCP can be used for when configuring SLP.  The first is to hand out the address of one or more DA addresses and the second is to hand a list of SLP scopes.  DHCP option 78 is used for the DA address and option 79 is used for scopes.  Option 78 also has scope field in it.

Our implementation of SLP does not use the scope field of the DA option (78).  It only allows for one scope to be specified and it could potentially indicate erroneous or out of date scope information.  Instead, we attempt to make direct contact with each DA identified by a DA option and read the scopes currently supported by the DA.  This guarantees accurate and up to date scope information and eliminates the necessity for the network administrator to update the DHCP server each time the scopes on a DA are changed.

Option 79 is not really required.  We do accept and process the Scope Option (79) and will add any scopes identified by this option to the list of Scopes received from active DAs or local configuration information (unless restricted by local configuration from processing SLP DHCP information).
