symptom

Error: "The version of the NT service you have loaded is out of date. Please install version 990413".

Error occurs after upgrading from ZENWorks 1.1 to ZENWorks 2, when NAL or NAL Explorer is started

This problem occurs on Windows NT 4.0 workstations when the user is not member of the NT Administrator group. If the user is member of the NT Administrator group, there is no error and the NAL NT Service file (NALNTSRV.EXE) is updated properly the first time NAL (NAL Launcher or NAL Explorer) is started on the workstation after the server has been upgraded from ZENWorks 1.1 to ZENWorks 2. If the user is not member of the NT Administrator group, then the NAL NT Service is not updated, NAL exits and some additional NAL files are not updated properly either. This problem is not related to file system rights, since it occurs on NT Workstations with the NTFS file system as well as on NT workstations with the FAT file system.

cause

This problem occurs because NAL cannot "auto-update" the NAL NT Service.

fix

Here are two different ways to solve this problem :

Install the Novell Client for Windows NT coming with the ZENworks 2 CD. This will install, among other things the new NAL NT Service on the NT Workstation.
Make the user member of the NT Administrator group long enough to install the client.

OR

Find an alternative way of replacing the NALNTSRV.EXE file by the new file coming with ZENWorks 2 (located in the
Products\Zenworks\Public\Winnt directory). One possible way of doing this is to create a new ZENWorks "scheduled action", (also known as an Add Action) configure it as "secure system" and from that scheduled action run the NALNTSRV.EXE located on the server with "INSTALL START" as the startup parameters. This will stop the service on the workstation copy the NALNTSRV.EXE down to the workstation and restart the service.

Keep in mind that a system process does not see the mapped drives (therefore, you will have to use UNC path) and that you will have to give enough file rights to the workstation object so that it can see the NALNTSRV.EXE file from the network. If you are not using workstation objects, you will have to find out another way of copying the new NALNTSRV.EXE file in a temporary directory on the local hard disk of the workstation (through the login script or with an Application Object for example) and then run NALNTSRV.EXE with the "INSTALL START" parameters from that temporary directory on the local workstation.

If you subsequently upgrade to a later version of ZENworks, be very careful to remove any automated procedure that may run this command, as, during migration, you may accidentally place an older version of the NAL NT Service on your workstation, with unpredictable results.
