Error: "Error 2186: The service is not responding to the control function"
Manually starting the Remote Management Service from Start | Settings | Control Panel | Services | Remote Management | Start results in the 2186 error.

MULTPROT.DLL error occurs when trying to manually start the Remote Management Service from Start | Settings | Control Panel | Services.
Error occurs when the workstation boots as Remote Control is loading as a service on NT.
cause
Problem appears to be caused by a software conflict with a Smart Pass client made by www.v-one.com. This is a VPN client. The SETUP.INI of the Smart Pass 3.4a client includes a line called PACKAGES=....SHIM. The function of the SHIM is intercept calls from WSOCK32.DLL. This SHIM renames the existing WSOCK32.DLL to WSOCKX.DLL. The properties of the newly renamed WSOCK32.DLL indicate that it is from V-ONE. It is suspected that this version of WSOCK32.DLL is not written to the winsock 2 specification.
Note: Instead of replacing Microsoft's WSOCK32.DLL with their own version, some versions of the V-ONE client install a new DLL called WSOCK32N.DLL
fix
Boot to DOS. Change to the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory. At the DOS prompt type: RENAME WSOCK32.DLL WSOCK32.OLD. Then type: RENAME WSOCKX.DLL WSOCK32.DLL.
In one case, Back-reving to an earlier version of the Smart Pass client fixed this.
In another case, various versions of V-One's SmartPass client (v4.0, 4.1, 4.1.1) caused the problem with the Remote Management service and installing SmartPass v4.1.2 fixed this problem.
