symptom

Error occurs during the installation of ZENworks.

Error: "Component error returned the following data transfer error: mediaName:data component: application management - software distribution. File group: <blank> File: B:\PUBLIC\NLS\ENGLISH\APPSNAP.CNT Error: -117 cannot read the specified file."

If component and file group are empty, file contains the name of the file that cannot be read.

If component and file group are not empty, then file contains the name of the file "inside the file media" that cannot be read. This is followed by "OK" prompt.

cause

The reason the -117 error occurs has to do with the fact that the Install Shield for ZENworks isn't designed to run from the server, but rather from the client. If it is ran while other users are logging in and/or accessing files in the SYS:PUBLIC directory and below that, the ZENworks install can fail with the -117 error.

fix

Make sure that no one is using the files in SYS:\PUBLIC and the subdirectories below that Retry the install if you get the error
message.

The customer with the appsnp95.dll error chose to download all of the files for the ZENworks 1.1 starter pack (WNT46E.EXE). Downloading and extracting the individual ZENworks files (ZSP11E1.EXE, ZSP11E2.EXE and ZSP11E3.EXE) and running SETUP.EXE from the products\zenworks directory installed ZENworks 1.1 starter pack successfully without the error.

A proposal has been made to add a RETRY option to address the issue and allow the installation to retry and resume without requiring starting the install over from scratch, but that proposal is pending.

UPDATE: Verify that no files are being accessed by other users.
