Novell Client for Windows NT/2000

Novell ZENworks for Desktops 2

3Com 3500 Switches

symptom

Error: "Could not configure workstation for application [...] (id=999)"

Error: "Problem: Unable to copy file [...]. (D018)"

The D018 error happened only on the first run of the install of any of the applications and if a second attempt was immediately tried, the install of the application worked fine.

The D018 error should be followed by a second message that defines the resource that cannot be accessed, but in this environment the second message almost never appeared.  Occasionally, a directory for the GroupWise application was in a second message but could not be directly linked to the D018 message.

The D018 error was also sometimes followed by a Dr. Watson error on NT/2000 in NALDESK.exe

change

The D018 error was only seen when the 3Com 3500 switch was being crossed.  If the 3Com switch was taken out of the picture, the D018 could not be generated.  The 3Com engineers found no problem with the 3Com environment.

This problem has also been seen with 3Com 4007 gigabit switches. If this switch was removed and replaced with a 10/100 3Com switch or 10/100 3Com hub, then the problem went away.

fix

Replace the switch in question with something different.
