symptom
NWAdmin details on the broker and/or manager show the status as down.
NDPS Manager shows status "Down" in NWADMIN32.EXE.
Users cannot print to any printer when status is "Down".
Cannot create an NDPS Printer Agent when status of the NDPS Manager is "Down".
Error: "Incorrect version of transport software."
Error occurs when trying to create an NDPS Printer.
The NDPS Broker is up and running on the server.
The NDPS Manager is up and running on the server.
Unloading and reloading BROKER.NLM does not fix the problem.
Unloading and reloading NDPSM.NLM does not fix the problem.
Symptoms may be present on one specific workstation or on entire specific network segment(s) even though others work fine.
Error: "Write fault occurred on the network."
cause
No communication route between workstation and server
Communication failure between workstation and server.
Corrupted NDS database information.
Client32 had become corrupted.
fix
Verify that the workstation can communicate with the NetWare server over any of the IP addresses bound at the NetWare server. Ensure that IP routing is enabled in the environment and that the workstation default router/gateway and subnet mask are correctly specified. Attempt to ping all IP addresses bound on the NetWare server to ensure communication is successful.
If IPX is bound then force the frame type on the Workstation: Follow the steps below
Select Network Neighborhood | Properties | Configuration tab | IPX 32 bit Protocol for Novell NetWare Client | Properties | Advanced IPX.
Select Primary logical board and ETHERNET_802.2 or 802.3should appear as frame type. Select - Use only the following frame types, OK.
Select component- IPX/SPX - compatible protocol | Properties | Advanced | Frame type . Pull down Value:, select 802.2 or 802.3, OK
Re-boot workstation.
When NDPSM.NLM and BROKER.NLM load at the NetWare server they bind to only one IPX address (the internal IPX address of the server) and only one IP address (whichever IP address was bound first on the NetWare server).
When the workstation NDPS client or NDPS management snap-in in NWADMN32 attempts to communicate with the NetWare server, if the NetWare server supports both IPX and IP the workstation will prefer to communicate via IP. If there is no route to the IP address on the NetWare server to which NDPS has bound, or if the workstation is configured with an improper IP gateway or subnet mask, communication to the NDPSM.NLM or BROKER.NLM will fail.
If a NetWare server has both IP and IPX support, and it is known that workstation cannot reach the IP address where NDPS has bound, one work around is to load BROKER.NLM and NDPSM.NLM with "/NOIP" on the command line so that they will only bind to the internal IPX address of the NetWare server. An enhancement request has been entered to allow for more options in controlling which IP address the services bind to and possibly to allow for multiple IP addresses to be bound simultaneously.
Another cause of similar failures are when the network address attribute of the NDPS manager or broker object is corrupt or missing.
Load DSREPAIR, advanced options, repair local DS database and select yes to rebuild operational schema. Run the repair and save the database. Then check the status in NWAdmin for the broker and/or manager.
If the DSREPAIR does not work, reinstall Client32 on the workstation and then launch NWADMIN32.EXE.
The "Write fault occurred on the network" error can happen when the printer being printed to is on a non-routeable private IP network (for example) that is connected to a NetWare server with two NICs, one NIC used for the public segment and one NIC used for the private segment. The NDPS manager binds to the first NIC listed in the AUTOEXEC.NCF. You can see the IP or IPX address the NDPS manager binds to in the details of the NDPS Manager object in NWADMN32, Identification tab, Net Address section. If the printer is on the private network segment and the NDPS Manager binds to the public segment, the NDPS manager cannot find a route to the printer and thus displays the "Write fault" error.
