fact

Novell NetWare 5.0

Novell NetWare 4.11

Novell Client 3.1 SP1 for Windows 95/98

Windows 95 or 98

symptom

Error: "3787 You must logon before performing this operation"

NET USE command is not working from a Novell login script.

change

Added a Microsoft NET USE command in the Novell login script.  The NET USE command was run from a batch file called from the login script.  The NET USE command in the login script was "NET USE P: \\NTSERVERNAME\SHARENAME"

cause

The Novell client is defined as the "Primary Network Logon" in the properties of Network Neighborhood.  Because authentication to the Microsoft Network has not occurred at the time the Novell login script runs, the error above occurs.

fix

There are two methods to resolve this issue.
1- Create an NT login script to run the NET USE command for the NT user (User Manager for Domains | NT user | Properties | Profile | Login Script Name).  This way the Novell client can remain the "Primary Network Logon", then the Microsoft client will launch and run the NT login script.
2- Designate the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks as the "Primary Network Logon".  This way, authentication to the Microsoft network takes place prior to running the Novell login script.
