fix
There is an option for the DHCP Server object called "Ping Enabled". If this option is selected the DHCP Server will Ping the first address in each address range when loading DHCPSRVR.NLM before handing out that address to a client. If the DHCP Server receives a response to the Ping, meaning that address is in use already, the DHCP Server will create an IP address object of type "Unauthorized". This simply tells the DHCP Server not to hand out this address for now. This information is also stored in Cache on the server because the complete DHCP database that is in NDS is also stored in Cache.
These objects can be deleted by using the DNSDHCP Admin tool or by using NWDAMIN (not recommended). For the FCS of NetWare 5 there is no automatic procedure to clean these IP objects out of the database. With the NetWare 5 Support Pack 1 every 4 hours, by default, the DHCP Server will go through the database in Cache and clean out all Unauthorized addresses marking that IP address available to hand out to a client. The IP objects in NDS are not deleted. The reason for this is performance. The IP address will most likely be used by a client at some time. Deleting the object from DS is time consuming and would impact performance.
The NW5 Support Pack 1 will also have a new SET command to clean up these unauthorized IP objects with an option to set the time interval, in hours, for performing the next scan for unauthorized IP addresses. The command is "SET UNAUTHORIZED IP SCAN INTERVAL = (1 to 8)". Entering this at the server would cause DHCPSRVR to free up all unauthorized IP addresses in its local cache memory immediately and then run the same process at the next set interval. NDS will be updated when these IP addresses have actually been assigned to clients.
